A$AP Rocky Makes Film Debut In ‘DOPE’

blame it on JES7 January 21, 2015

The 2015 Sundance Film Festival kicks off tomorrow (I need to attend this and Cannes at least once in my lifetime). One of the stand out films that is scheduled to premiere at Park City, Utah is the Rick Famuyiwa (The Wood, Brown Sugar) directed, coming-of-age film Dope.

Starring Zoe Kravitz (who just wrapped shooting a film with KiD CuDi), Blake Anderson, Forest Whitaker, A$AP Rocky, Tyga, Casey Veggies, Vince Staples, Diddy and a whole lot more.

Instead of solely focusing on the stereotypical hood life which many of these films seem to do, director Rick Famuyiwa is trying to show the other side of the spectrum – the regular kid trying to survive in his home town hardened streets. Via IMDB:

A coming of age comedy/drama for the post hip hop generation. Malcolm is a geek, carefully surviving life in The Bottoms, a tough neighborhood in Inglewood, CA filled gangsters and drugs dealers, while juggling his senior year of college applications, interviews and the SAT. His dream is to attend Harvard. A chance invitation to a big underground party leads Malcolm and his friends into a, only in Los Angeles, gritty adventure filed with offbeat characters and bad choices. If Malcolm can persevere, he’ll go from being a geek, to being dope, to ultimately being himself.

Watch the official trailer above, with Pharrell contributing three songs for the film/character arch, as well as producing the film alongside Diddy & Forest Whitaker. If you’re in Park City, Utah between Jan. 22nd through Feb 1st, don’t miss it. Then come back here and let us know how it was.
