Slug (from Atmostphere), who is a co-founder of the record label Rhymesayers, created a dynasty in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with his label, and from it stemmed Soundset, a festival with this this year headlined Big Sean, Ice Cube, Ludacris and more. At the festival, which took place May 24, Slug sat down with DJ Skee and talked about 20 years of Rhymesayers being in existence and the development of Soundset since it started in 2008.
When Slug and his three friends, Ant, Musab and Siddiq, started Rhymesayers, he said they didn’t have an end goal. “We still don’t,” he joked. He also said that when creating Soundset, he wanted to make sure he got all flavors of hip-hop involved, which is why artists like Ice Cube, Ludacris, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib and Chester Watson appeared on the same stage.
