For the last week I escaped the sometimes claustrophobic nature of New York City and returned home to the gridlocked confines of Southern California. Naturally, many of the city’s amenities – such as my affinity for all meals In-N-Out Burger and my West Coast-bred “accent” – has returned in full, particularly my Left-leaning musical tendencies. It’s just something about playing music from the likes of Dom Kennedy and Pac Div that emits a more organic feeling in comparison to listening to it in Brooklyn.
Which brings me to my point. I was recently greeted with this lovely number by a good friend of mine, CaptainIsCool and P.Newton’s “Big Homie.” While I admittedly haven’t heard much of either of the artists (save for Captain’s feature on TiRon and Ayomari’s The Great New Wonderful EP), the song is both A: produced by Like of Pac Div and B: caters wholeheartedly to my inner appreciation for all things #BrilliantIgnorance. Credit – or blame – my extended stay back home for this, but the song went from annoyingly basic to instantly unforgettable in a matter of moments. Needless to say, this may catch a couple of spins at The DopeHouseLA this week.
