John Givez made his first DopeHouse appearance with “Elementary Trill,” a touching tribute to the way he was raised by his parents. The song will appear on the his upcoming Soul Rebel LP, which, according to the pre-order site, is expected in “late August” – so, essentially, any day now. And while we wait, the Cali emcee gives 2DBZ the green light to debut the next single, “2004.”

Detailing his summer days as a youth, Givez reminisces on love, neighbors playing dominoes on the porch, and contemplating smoking weed for the first time – only to have his mother shut the rebel in him down. Some people try to avoid their past, but Givez fully embraces it, aware of the little things that helped turn him into the man he is today. It’ll be interesting to see how the album transitions from the innocent youth to the Soul Rebel that lives in Givez.

Check out the DJ Rek & Wontel-produced “2004” – which fits right into an end-of-summer playlist – below, and pre-order Soul Rebel here.
