In his prime, you couldn’t tell me that Prodigy was one of the top emcees of that era. Unflinchingly cold, with a heart turned to coal due to his Queensbridge upbringing, P was simply untouchable during his Hell on Earth–Murda Muzik–H.N.I.C. run. Combined that with the gutter backdrops provided by a young Alchemist and associates Infamous Mobb (Ty Nitty, Twin Gambino and Godfather Pt.III), they’d produced some of the better street raps of the late 90s/early Aughts.
(In a testament to my advancing age and dwindling sanity) You couldn’t tell me that tracks like “Mobb N*ggaz [The Sequel]…”
… or “Thug Muzik…”
weren’t mean.
Anyways, DJ Absolut – who has been on a vintage tear and revealing freestyles of hip hop’s past, including joints by Cassidy and Swizz Beatz and AZ – unveiled another freestyle with both Prodigy and the Infamous Mobb at the helm, over a classic Illmatic instrumental. Go back in time below.
As a bonus, Prodigy also announced that he will be releasing a new solo album, The Hegelian Dialectic, later this year…
