The business of rap can be a cruel temptress. One moment an artist is on top of the world, working with some of its most popular denizens, then the next you’re struggling in freestyle competitions trying to take a dump on stage. For MC Jin, he has experienced the rap business from both sides (albeit, not exactly the “drop trou” part). A mega-popular frestyle champion on BET’s 106 & Park, his exposure on the show led to him landing a record deal with Ruff Ryders and was primed to be the next up from the label. Unfortunately, things didn’t pan out as planned.

Sitting down with Eric and Jeff Rosenthal on the latest episode of their podcast, Jin speaks on everything. From his battle rapping days, his time with the house that DMX built, how his album suffered a major setback despite having the likes of Wyclef Jean, Swizz Beatz, Just Blaze and Kanye West on it (that kind of lineup on a single will never happen for a new artist in this era, unless your pockets rival Rich Uncle Pennybags), landing a spot in both 2 Fast 2 Furious and its various soundtracks, trading battle rapping for comedy, and much more, the three share tales over a plate of salmon with couscous (because, apparently, bacon can cause cancer).
