As a fan of the new, “unorthodox” (if you can call it that) R&B music that serves as a minimalist alternative to the traditional, Top 40-dominating sounds, I am almost always attracted to the songs of artists such as Kehlani (whose album, You Should Be Here, was nominated for a 2016 GRAMMY) and Bryson Tiller. Perhaps that’s why I’ve become such a fan of Y.E. Ali, who – while he definitely fits the mold of those contemporaries – has a unique and category-less style of his own.
As he prepares to release his much-teased project Private Suite in 2016, Ali reveals a visual treatment for his recent single “LNF.” The clip takes place at a mansion party, with all of the amenities: women, weed, and brown water. Both Trinidad James (as well as his DJ, Looney) and PARTYNEXTDOOR, who is also a purveyor of said minimalist alternative sound, make appearances as well. The murky feel of the song gets even more turbid towards the end of the video, which is something you’ll have to see for yourself below.
