It isn’t supposed to be like this for Rowdy Rebel.
In 2014 he, along with Bobby Shmurda and their GS9 compatriots, were miles removed from their hardscrabble lives in Flatbush, Brooklyn, propelled into the spotlight thanks to viral-friendly and immensely popular songs like “Hot Boy” and “Computers.” It would all come crashing down on them shortly before Christmas 2014, as the two of them – along with several other members of their crew – were arrested on a multitude of drug, assault and gun charges. Rowdy and Bobby were ultimately separated from each other (in a recent interview, Rowdy mentioned that he and Bobby were moved around various jails throughout New York before being split apart months ago), and Bobby has had considerable difficulty getting his bail granted.
So, it’s rather bittersweet that Rowdy has released his new mixtape Shmoney Keeps Calling. While the project boasts features from rising stars and high-profile names like A$AP Ferg, TeeFLii, Ty Dolla $ign, French Montana and more, Rowdy is at the time of this piece still a ward in Rikers Island and is thus unable to carouse in the release of the project. While he hopes to be freed in the Spring of 2016, if any of Bobby’s bad luck is rubbed off on him however he may not. Stream and download the entire project below.
