Lalah Hathaway, daughter of the legendary Donny, remade one of his best-known songs, “Little Ghetto Boy,” for her recent album Live. The song was also nominated for a 2016 Grammy Award in the Best Traditional R&B Performance category, which will pit her against Faith Evans, Jazmine Sullivan, Tyrese, and Charlie Wilson.
Lalah has revealed a video for “Ghetto Boy,” which also features Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, and Snoop Dogg (who interpolates his own verse from Dr. Dre’s The Chronic single “Lil’ Ghetto Boy,” which also sampled Donny Hathaway’s version). While the sound may have changed, the message of the 1972 original is more prevalent that ever today.
