Next up to jam with The Roots is Andra Day, who recently KILLED her performance with Ellie Goulding at the GRAMMYs. Following Alessia Cara, Day used the jam session to share her rendition of Kendrick Lamar’s “No Makeup,” which originally landed on the Compton rapper’s Section.80 mixtape back in 2011.
Day’s cover features a far-more-soulful spin on the song discussing female beauty and the use of makeup as a cover for personally viewed imperfections. Over time, this song hasn’t aged very well for me in Kendrick’s ever-growing discography, and now that I hear this version, it sounds much more natural coming from a woman herself.
