One of the first songs I ever memorized every word to was Three 6 Mafia’s “Stay Fly.” The very first verse I remember perfecting was the second in the song, DJ Paul‘s threat that he’ll steal your money, drugs and girl all in one fell swoop. I was 11. I had absolutely zero clue what “it’s purple purp purple purp purple, swallow it down” meant at 11, because of course I didn’t. But now that I’m writing about DJ Paul 11 years later for a hip-hop website is both surreal and somehow bringing comfort to 11-year-old me.
The Memphis native joined Azizi Gibson, a DopeHouse favorite formerly signed to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label, for “Bragging Rights.” Over creeping, minimalistic production (produced by Paul), the two do just as the name of the song implies: list reasons why they have bragging rights over you. Whether it’s going across the world to elope with every woman possible or signing to a label, they did it just to say that they did it. These two struggle to find a modest bone in their body, but then again, it’d be tough for me to if I had that money.
Listen to “Bragging Rights,” which is set to land on an upcoming project form Gibson, below.
