For the average outsider, saying that some of today’s Atlanta-based hip hop is “weird” will usually elicit an “Shaq Face“-esque reaction from those who have long known that the city has been in touch with its eccentric side for decades now . From OutKast naming their second album ATLiens all the way to Young Thug‘s… well, everything, passing off The Big Peach’s non-trap/street sensibilities as simply “bizarro” is essentially an insult to them entirely.

Such is the case with newcomer Lil Yachty. The 18-year-old rapper makes music deeply rooted in unorthodox, with a sound that I couldn’t describe because it’s so… different (that’s not an insult or negative criticism) from what I’ve associated Atlanta rap with. However, he has attracted the attention of some notable names, and even modeled stood in silence during Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo/YEEZY Season 3 fashion show. He’s now released his new project, Lil Boat, to some hype among the youth. When the project begins with a sample of Finding Nemo, you know that this isn’t your average musical trip. The album features a handful of local acts and some of his friends, but it also has a remix to his song “Minnesota” with Quavo, Skippa Da Flippa and Thugger Thugger as well.

Listen to Lil Boat in its entirety below, and come up with your own thoughts on the matter.
