Fresh from a career-defining album with DJ Premier, Royce Da 5’9″ recently sat down with Complex Editor-In-Chief Noah Calahan-Bever to speak on his forthcoming solo LP LAYERS. Years removed from his wild child, short-fused days, Nickel Nine is unafraid of shedding his armor to reveal his more vulnerable side, which is evidenced in the first single “Tabernacle.”

While with Bever (they have known each other for decades now), Royce spoke on his career thus far, which includes turning down a hefty Dr. Dre deal (imagine if they did more than “The Throne Is Mine” and “Xxplosive Part 2“) for Tommy Boy, and more. He also chronicled his journey toward sobriety, how Eminem helped him through the process and how it’s shaped his music now. It’s a rather in-depth interview that should definitely be checked out.

Royce also speaks on the recent diss song from Troy Ave, “Bad Ass,” as well.
