Since catching on in 2014 with a Drake co-sign — and later signing to the superstar’s OVO Sound label — ILOVEMAKONNEN has found himself surveying the music world by lonesome. After his iLoveMakonnen 2 EP quietly dropped at the end of last year, the Atlanta native has had to focus on his hooks, catchiness and notoriety from “Tuesday” to stay afloat as we wait for to him to discover his sound. The process has been interesting, to say the least.
I’ll be able to remember songs like “Trust Me Danny, “No Ma’am” and “I Like Tuh” 25 years from now. They stick that well. But as every force has an equal and opposite reaction, there are times attempts at radio hits fall by the wayside. There’s no doubt Makonnen has the confidence to release his music with or without the support of his label, and Drink More Water 6 is a continuation of him trying to hone in on his talents.
