Madlib & Hemlock Ernst – “Rings In The Coffee”

Madlib and Hemlock Ernst, the rap persona of Sam Herring — the lead man of Future Islands, joined together last year as Trouble Knows Me, and they released their self-titled EP in the summer. The two had been relatively quiet since the release, but last night, they had a new song, “Rings In The Coffee,” debuted on BBC Radio 1 during a guest DJ set by Four Tet.

This man Hemlock Ernst, as I said yesterday, is mighty fine with the pen. He appeared on songs with Busdriver and Milo last year, and his raspy voices paired with a vivacious flow consistently stood out. Those trends continue while delivering bars over Madlib’s dusty, sample-heavy production.
