Kali Uchis most recent release, “Only Girl,” a soothing, summery song featuring Vince Staples and Steve Lacy, has now gotten the visual treatment.
The self-directed video for the Kaytranada-produced song has the main love interest, Steve Lacy, surrounded by women. But as he says in the song, Kali is the only girl for him, so he just needs “one more chance” to redeem himself. Kali follows suit, describing the situation in the video as “how disposable/replaceable ‘lovers’ are treated and the things we will say/do out of loneliness,” making it obvious her character doesn’t realize the man at the beginning of the video is sitting in the same shoes as her, adding to the vicious cycle of love.
Uchis tweeted some of her inspirations for the video “were edie [sedgewick], nancy sinatra & calle 13,” and it’s pretty clear she followed suit promoting self-beauty. Watch the video above.
