At the 2016 Sundance Film Festival I had the pleasure of being one of the first audiences to see Southside With You. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the movie about Barack and Michelle’s first date but was pleasantly surprised with how well the subject matter was handled. Without giving a full out review, Parker Sawyers gives us one hell of a performance as young POTUS while Tika Sumpter holds her own as Michelle. More importantly, the story is well put together and pretty much qualifies as the best first date in the history of dates between two of the most significant and groundbreaking figures in American history.

Inspired by Barack and Michelle Obama’s first date, Southside With You recounts the eventful summer day in 1989 when a young law firm associate named Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) tried to woo lawyer Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter) during a daylong date that took them from the Art Institute of Chicago to a screening of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing to the site of their first kiss outside of an ice cream parlor.

Apparently, John Legend must have thought the same and serves as executive producer for the film that hits theaters on August 26. Or, just in time for you to cry about Obama vacating his position before Donald Trump moves in, paints the Black House white again and forces America to file bankruptcy while reinforcing slavery in the 21st century. I’m kidding about the second half of that sentence.

I hope…

Check out the trailer for Southside With You below, and be sure to get to a theater near you on August 26.
