Being honest, I really did not get into Andra Day until much later into her GRAMMY-nominated career, following her commercial with Stevie Wonder during the holiday season. It is better later than never, however, and she makes her debut at the House of Dope with her new (double) video “Rise Up.”
Directed by M. Night Shyamalan (yes, The Sixth Sense guy), this is Day’s second video to be directed by a filmmaker: the first, “Forever Mine,” was directed by Spike Lee. “Rise Up” is a precursor to her performance at the 2016 Essence Festival in New Orleans. Her debut album, Cheers to the Fall, is out now.
