Growing up as a Black man in America, one of the earliest signifiers that what I learned in school about my culture’s history was a crock was when I would discover Alex Haley’s seminal 1976 novel Roots via the television miniseries of the same name. While it’s rather difficult to watch it now — part of it due to the fact that it will literally take an entire day to watch, part of it because it tends to raise my blood pressure — I am very interested in seeing what The History Channel will do with their forthcoming remake, set to air on Memorial Day 2016 (May 30th).
With Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Anika Noni Rose, Anna Paquin, and T.I., this incarnation of Roots aims to recreate the multiple award-winning original for the new millennium (read: the social media generation). It appears to be as emotionally-pulling as the original… but with more T.I. in it. Needless to say, I know what I’m doing on Memorial Day!
