Born – Born Flexin (Mixtape)

Although usually known to frequent underground/backpack rap circles, Beantown emcee Born has recently tapped into the trap rap matrix this year.

After flexing with his usual cohort G. Dot and Masta Ace on “Ghetto Survivor” last year, the boom-bap stalwart rapper decided to try his hand at something different on “Dreamin Bout Money.”

Those already familiar with Born’s lyrical output may be somewhat put off at first listen, however, his journey into the exotic “sub-genre” does not come off as forced or phony — sounding rather comfortable over CMBEATS’s rolling drums and 808 bass-heavy production. Although partner-in-rhyme G. Dot’s presence is missing, the Boston native stands firmly on his square and does not relinquish his street-rap roots.
