Tuesday morning (Prince’s birthday), BET announced it will honor Prince at the BET Awards on June 26 with a lineup headlined by D’Angelo, The Roots, Janelle Monaé and Sheila. E, one of Prince’s closest collaborators, and more. The network also announced Alicia Keys, Maxwell and more will perform at the award show.
A couple of weeks ago, there was a tribute to Prince at Billboard Awards headlined by Madonna, a move bashed by some and questioned by many given the wide range of other artists who were more profoundly influenced and affected by The Purple Man’s music. Nevertheless, the show went on with a surprise appearance from Stevie Wonder, which some saw as an attempt to win back some of the pre-performance critics.
It seems BET, at the planning stages, will have the tribute planned out right from the get-go this time around.
In 2010, BET gave Prince a Lifetime Achievement award, which came along with a tribute, too. Watch Patti LaBelle take over “Purple Rain” below.
