The sneaker culture has gone hand-in-hand with the hip hop culture since its birth, with several of today’s top artists releasing their own pair of shoes. Unfortunately, the violent and negative aspects of each meet at the crossroads too, with people becoming victims to larceny, assault, and even death over them.

Director Justin Tipping explores the latter with his debut film, KICKS. Written by Tipping and Joshua Beirne-Golden, the film focuses on Brandon: a teenager who, after earning his coveted pair of Air Jordans, gets them stolen. He then embarks on a mission with his friends to retrieve them from the local hood who snatched them. Starring Jahking Guillory, the film also stars Christopher Jordan “C.J.” Wallace, the son of The Notorious B.I.G. (Wallace previously starred alongside Will Ferrell in the 2010 comedy-drama Everything Must Go, and he played a teenaged Biggie Smalls in the biopic Notorious). Arriving September 9th, the film’s trailer can be seen below.
