In December of 2015, New York City-based lyricist Mean Joe Scheme opened up the doors to his unique sound with the debut of his first album, You Gotta Watch.

The LP — released on J57’s FiveSeven Music label — is packed full of punchy basslines, nasty breakbeats and incredible soul samples culled from some of the deepest crates in the possession of the project’s long-list of producers (Optiks, J57, Noam The Drummer, IMAKEMADBEATS), steeped in nostalgic boom-bap.

Today, Joe, who’s revealed NaS’ Illmatic as one of the most influential albums to his sound is taking it back to the days of roof top parties on “Ultra Jim Beam,” a new single which is also a nod to Kanye West’s “Ultralight Beam” and produced by Optiks.
