In a world replete with greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue and rivalry, Marco Polo is based on the famed explorer’s adventures in Kublai Khan’s court in 13th Century China, and the dark and tempestuous battle for the expanding Mongol empire.

Although it’s been a little over a year-and-a-half since Netflix’s original series Marco Polo ended its first season, it, for some reason, has felt like an eternity. Perhaps this could be attributed to my stannery of the show — loosely based on Marco Polo’s interactions and relationship with Kublai Khan, emperor/Khagan of the Mongol empire, and grandson of the Great Genghis Khan. This, despite the show being panned by many critics.

For what it’s worth though, there’s an obvious cult following of the show, as Netflix would have never greenlit a second season judging by the show’s ratings found on Rotten Tomatoes. Then again, who actually takes those said ratings seriously? I sure as hell don’t.

Regardless of whatever opinion you may hold for the show, be it discontent or satisfaction, season 2 of the period drama is set to air all of its episodes on July 1st. Watch the official trailer below, then head here to watch the half-hour Netflix special on Taoist monk Hundred Eyes/Bayan of the Baarin.

And just in case you were wondering what the name of the song playing in the trailer is, it’s by indietronica artist MILCK. Listen to “Devil, Devil” here, and purchase through her Bandcamp page.
