MTV Unveils 2016 Video Music Award Nominations

I could probably start this piece with a couple hundred words about how music videos don’t mean as much anymore — both due to the immediacy at which music is shared and stations like MTV no longer dedicating time to the visual art — but, if I had to guess, I probably did something like that last year when the Video Music Award nominations came up.

Naturally, the 2016 nominations follow a trend of “hottest songs of the year” rather than “best videos of the year,” but there still are some standouts in the pool: Beyoncé’s “Formation” and other selections from her LEMONADE album, Kanye West’s “Famous,” Drake’s “Hotline Bling,” Chance the Rappers’s “Angels,” The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” and more.
