The name Danny Clinch may not be familiar to some, but his works have.

The photographer had cut his teeth shooting the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Nas, Beastie Boys and a host of others. However it was not until a chance session with 2Pac that would forever etch his name in the annals of hip hop.

Clinch, in 1993, was hired to capture the rapper for a brief 1993 Rolling Stone Magazine profile. However, when he was tragically gunned down three years later that same picture would grace the magazine’s front cover, becoming one of both ‘Pac and Clinch’s most popular images ever.

Clinch recently spoke to TIME about the image, where he reflected on his time working with 2Pac.
