De La Soul — along with Estelle — were musical guests on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night when they performed their and the Anonymous Nobody… single “Memory Of… (US)” with help from The Roots.
While it’s not uncommon for musical guests to not get any interview time with the host, I don’t exactly know how well it would’ve gone had Jimmy Fallon tried to talk about the legendary careers of De La Soul. I’m making a safe assumption there would be more fluff conversation than anything in-depth about the making of their album
Which is why it’s so wonderful Fallon has Questlove working at the same spot.
The Roots drummer sat down with the trio backstage to ask questions from fans as well as spark some conversation of his own.
The three talked about how they came up with the name “De La Soul,” Posdnous’ name’s origin (he wanted to be called MC Logiticus), why Dave changed his name from Trugoy the Dove, the creation of 3 Feet High and Rising, whether they think younger rappers should have a better understanding of hip-hop culture and more.
