Given DOOM’s masking from the public eye, most videos for songs including him either just don’t feature him at all or come in the form of an animated, cartoonish or claymation visual — the latter which is the case with “Super Hero.”
“When I produced the track I pictured DOOM as a bunch of different Marvel characters,” Keith told The FADER, who premiered the video. “Like two super heroic distinctive rappers with powers.”
That idea is translated over the to the visual as DOOM’s mask and Kool Keith’s outer space elements float amongst each other as stars in each other’s worlds.
Kris Merc, the video’s director, pitched in, too: “I wanted to capture something that felt like a visual pop travesty. I wanted it to visually speak to the legacy of the artists, and Afrofuturism mixed with comic book concepts. I’m a fan of the unseen, and I was obsessed with the idea of using DOOM’s mask and the iconography as a centralized point — as if time and space converged around these strange, sometimes magical tableaus and we were witnessing an ascension.”
