Earlier in the summer, handwritten lyrics from the late 2Pac were put on sale for the “low” price of nearly $40,000. That took the (unofficial, DopeHouse) crown of “The Most Expensive 2Pac Item Out Today…” for roughly six weeks.

The Goldin Auctions October Legends Auction happened this weekend (October 29th), which auctioned off over 1,500 items from Bill Bucker’s 1986 World Series Glove to a hotel stock certificate signed by Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel. However, the top earner from the public sale? Tupac Amaru Shakur.

Lots #34, a four-page handwritten essay ‘Pac wrote from prison, fetched for a whopping $172,750. Titled “Is Thug Life Dead?,” the letter was written from his Clinton Correctional Facility cell in 1995 (while he was serving his prison sentence on sexual assault charges) to Nina Bhadreshwar, a British writer and artist who worked as a publicist for Death Row Records between 1994 and 1996 (Nina also directed the 2000 film Death Row Uncut).

“This remarkable letter from Tupac exemplifies what’s thrilling about the auction business as this recently discovered find caught the eye of several serious and well-heeled bidders who went back and forth for hours until this record-setting price was reached,” said Ken Goldin, Founder of Goldin Auctions.

To wit, a letter from 2Pac went for more money than a Super Bowl ring, a pair of Muhammad Ali’s boxing gloves, Michael Jordan’s rookie card, and the last basketball jersey Kobe Bryant wore as a player at the same auction.
