Kevin Abstract is releasing his new album, American Boyfriend, on November 18. Just over two weeks from the release, the Texas artist took to Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show to debut “Yellow.”

Abstract said he wanted make a song that sounded like early 2000s pop music, influenced largely by Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles.” There’s an ode to the era in the name, too, as Coldplay’s “Yellow” kicked off what would be a domination of 2000s soft rock/pop, which Abstract’s “Yellow” gravitates to. This kid does what he wants, and it usually works.

“Yellow” follows “Echo,” which is the first single and one of the final songs on the project’s 16-song tracklist, and “Empty.”

After Lowe played the song twice, the two talked about the album’s influences, how he met the people he works with (the Internet), Kid Cudi and more. Then Lowe ran it back a third time.
