At 11 p.m. on Christmas Eve, Run the Jewels surprised us with their new album, Run The Jewels 3, three weeks early.
A couple days before the album dropped, there were rumors of the duo appearing on the next season of Portlandia — a sketch comedy show run by Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein. It turns out one of the sketches Killer Mike and El-P filmed for the show was a session on ways to drop their album by surprise.
After running through options (faking El-P’s death, having The Four Horsemen bring the album in during the apocalypse), they seemed to have settled on re-chiseling Mount Rushmore into the Run the Jewels symbol. Works for me.
