Khalid is one of the DopeHouse’s favorite up-and-coming singers with songs like “Location,” “Whirlwind” and “Saved” as evidence why.

He’s dropping his debut album, American Teen, on March 3, but there’s still plenty in the world who don’t know what the El Paso native is all about. Born to a single mother in the military, Khalid jumped around the United States and Germany before settling in El Paso in his senior year of high school.

In the new documentary developed by The FADER, Khalid discusses moving around throughout his childhood but how his new hometown helped bring the creative side out in him. He also talks about his mom, who joined the military choir, and how she’s one of his biggest musical influences.
