The first time I heard of Khalid was his single “Location,” at which time I wrote: “he sounds a bit like a mix between Aloe Blacc and theMIND, all blanketed with his own brand of soul.” I always do it, but I’m dumb for making comparisons, because they can change from song to song with every decent artist.

Since then, the El Paso artist has dropped songs like “American Teen” — the title track from his new album — “Saved” and “Shot Down,” that all, for lack of a better phrase, shoot those comparisons down. He’s only 18 years old, but she’s shown a polished talent for making pop music, and now that talent is splayed across his 15-track debut album American Teen.

Taking on the tracklist solo, stream American Teen below and cop it on iTunes.
