Man, it’s been a minute since we’ve heard from ZZ Ward (last appearing on Asher Roth’s “Parties At The Disco” in 2014). But the blue-eyed singer is back in action with her new single, “The Deep.”

“I wrote this song about feeling trapped in a relationship that I knew was no good for me,” ZZ told the Fader. “It is about losing control of myself and the constant back and forth that I went through.”

Like past releases with Freddie Gibbs (“Criminal“) and Kendrick Lamar (“Cryin’ Wolf“), ZZ locks in a rap verse from Chicago’s Joey Purp—who does his thing, of course.

“I felt there was something haunting about the music in The Charmels ‘As Long As I’ve Got You’ (which you may recognize from Wu-Tang’s “C.R.E.A.M.”),” ZZ continued. “So, I wanted to sample and use it as inspiration.”
