There’s been a new wave of artists who are keen on reviving the sound of funk—which, let’s be honest, is part of the backbone of Hip-Hop–including Bruno Mars, whose recent 24K Magic album has been branded by some as “future funk.” More recently, LA’s B. Bravo brought his A-game, bridging the not-so-wide gap between R&B, dance and cosmic funk on his Paradise LP.

Speaking of a revival of funk, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Moniquea is set to release her upcoming album, Blackwavefunk on June 2nd via MoFunk Records, and today, she brings the noise with the project’s latest single, “Checkin’ Out.” Produced by XL Middleton, the single is an up-tempo number which calls back to the early days of 80s new wave, synthpop and disco-funk; not unlike the soulful electro-funk of Cameo.

Take a quick trip back into the 80s and press play on “Checkin’ Out” below. Pre-order Blackwavefunk on Bandcamp now.
