One can suggest that Wale is in a good place, both personally and professionally, at the moment.

Following his 2015 album, The Album About Nothing, topping the Billboard 200, Wale would receive one of the greatest joys known to mankind: the birth of his daughter, Zyla Moon. With a renewed purpose in life, Wale released the single “My PYT,” which would eventually go Gold.

(Having a diverse array of beautiful women in the video was an added bonus. But, digressing.)

Wale has returned with his fifth album, SHiNE, a week ahead of its planned May 5th release.

“I wondered why I’m not where I want to be. Maybe I was wrong all along,” Wale said a few months back on Instagram. “In the past two years. I’ve been lied to. I’ve seen people I made family stab me in the back in broad day lite (we gon see u soon). I realized around ‘Ground Hog Day‘ maybe there is nothin I can do. I’ve wrote stories I’ve made hits I’ve dropped jewels. Letting go of perception is a process that I’ve dedicated this round to. I’m totally dedicated to the people who understand me right now. I’m tryna focus on the people who TRY to understand me. Good and bad. I’m constantly evolving, learning.”

An acronym for Still Here Ignoring Negative Energy, SHiNE features contributions from Travi$ Scott (“Fish n Grits“), Lil Wayne (“Running Back“), G-Eazy (“Fashion Week“), J. Balvin, Davido, Chris Brown, Major Lazer and others. Even his daughter appears on the album’s closing track as well.
