Who would’ve thought that one of New York rap’s more promising up-and-comers would come from a reality show that actually didn’t paint her in a negative light?
Bronx native Cardi B, social media icon and Love & Hip Hop alum, used the VH1 reality series the right way, pushing her musical aspirations into the public eye. And it’s worked: she’s now the recipient of a pair of BET Awards nominations, for Best Female Hip Hop Artist and Best New Artist, thanks to the success of her Gangsta B**ch Music Vol. 2 mixtape.
Cardi has now released a video for one of her project’s more popular songs, “Lick,” with Offset (whom she is rumored to be in a relationship with). “‘Lick’ is about the moment when you catch a big come up or when you make a big check,” Cardi explained to FADER. “When you just make something that weren’t expecting to do, but it goes to your benefit. And that’s what happened with my life — I caught a lick.”
