Fool’s Gold Records co-founder A-Trak is one of the few popular deejays today who is still a purveyor of the craft (or, “real DJ’ing”). So much so, that the multiple DMC World DJ Champion is now launching a new venture to give aspiring producers and deejays their time in the spotlight.
A-Trak, along with his Fool’s Gold Records as well as VICE’s Vice‘s music channels THUMP and Noisey, will debut the Goldie Awards, a deejay and beat battle, on September 7th. “This is a new project that I’m really excited about because it’s even more close to my roots and foundation,” A-Trak said to Billboard. “I earned my reputation in battling winning… a bunch of more titles until 2000. I remember how that put my name on the map. That was when deejaying was more underground. It was sort of a light bulb moment that brought about the Goldie Awards.”
Taking place in Brooklyn, NY, A-Trak will have Diplo, Just Blaze, Destructo, Mannie Fresh and others as judges. Dave East will host the Goldies.
An open competition, potential contestants are encouraged to send one-minute submissions via Instagram or the Goldie Awards website. Six producers and six deejays will then be chosen to compete.
Needless to say, no AUX cords allowed.
