With her sophomore album Melodrama out in two weeks, Lorde shares the fourth single, “Sober.”
Just as the last single, “Perfect Places,” did, “Sober” finds a happy medium between the pace of first two, “Green Light” and “Liability.”
Lorde said the album takes a look at a singular night of going out and all the range of emotions a young adult can feel during a night of drinking and getting fucked up post-relationship. “Sober” falls right after the I-don’t-give-a-fuck-anymore energy of the intro, “Green Light,” so she’s still riding a high of not caring about consequences.
Listen to “Sober” below, and pre-order Melodrama on iTunes.
Lorde detailed the making of the song with Jack Antonoff on Twitter.

i’ll never forget writing the first demo it was like a trance i guided jack to the chords almost wordlessly with my hands on his shoulders

came up with the “midnight, lose my mind” pitched sample on a sinfully hot day in palm springs and also started sober II that day as well

but this song was so important to me because it felt like pop music i hadn’t heard before, this sprawling brass & strange vocal syncopation

& i think we expressed the emotions so purely- it’s leaning & drawling, juvenile & triumphant – impressing someone then embarrassing urself

& that late-saturday-night declaration “WE PRETEND THAT WE JUST DON’T CARE / BUT WE CARE” tasted as fresh & new in my mouth as ice water
