DJ Premier Shares Official Version Of Mobb Deep’s “Cop Hell”

blame it on Meka June 22, 2017

Because it’s often ignored in comparison to their breakout album, some don’t remember that Mobb Deep‘s first album came out a full year before Nas‘ magnum opus Illmatic and two years prior to The Infamous in 1993: Juvenile Hell.

Released on 4th & B’way, Prodigy and Havoc worked with DJ Premier on on the song “Peer Pressure.”

Prior to that the three also worked on another cut, “Cop Hell,” which was the B-Side to Gang Starr‘s 1992 single “Doe In Advance” (which would end up on the group’s 1994 album Hard To Earn. Although never officially released as a standalone song, “Cop Hell” was widely bootlegged. Now Premier himself has decided to share the official version, giving a bit of background on the making of the song:

THIS SONG WAS PULLED FROM THE JUVENILE HELL LP AFTER THE WHOLE ICE-T “COP KILLER” SONG WAS SHOCKING THE WORLD; SO MOBB DEEP’s LABEL 4TH & B’WAY REMOVED IT AS WELL…

SOME COPIES LEAKED, BUT MOST DJ’s DON’T HAVE IT.

ME, PRODIGY AND HAVOC GOT PULLED OVER BY THE COPS IN 1993 AND THEY WERE ON SOME FOUL SH*T, BUT WE WERE ABLE TO GET AWAY WITHOUT THEM FINDING OUT HOW DIRTY THE CAR WAS BACK THEN…

SO WE WROTE THIS SONG ABOUT IT…

HERE IT IS UNCUT…

In honor of Prodigy, the song can be heard below.
