Jimmy Iovine — the co-founder of Interscope Records and successful business partner og Dr. Dre — is out and about promoting his upcoming four-part documentary series The Defiant Ones, which documents his and Dre’s relationship as well as their separate beginnings in music.

The documentary starts to air July 9 on HBO, and he stopped by Pharrell and Scott Vener‘s OTHERtone Radio on Beats 1 to discuss the influence technology has had over the record business. Iovine detailed about why he all but left the record business in the early 2000s after seeing how poorly the record labels handled music piracy. He also spoke about how streaming services and social media are affecting artists’ mood and record deals.
