On July 4th, 1995, Michael Eugene Archer — better known by his stage name, D’Angelo — released his debut album Brown Sugar. Selling over two million copies, Brown Sugar helped usher in the “Neo soul” sound of R&B and remains one of the most influential albums of the genre.
While D’Angelo has largely remained a recluse since (save for his Black Messiah album in 2014 and sporadic live performances), he will be releasing a remastered deluxe edition of Brown Sugar on August 25th. A double-CD reissue, Rolling Stone is reporting that the deluxe edition will contain twenty-one rare songs, “including previously issued remixes, instrumentals and a cappella versions.”
The deluxe edition will also contain a 20-page booklet that will house vintage photographs, the original lyrics and an essay from author, columnist, journalist and filmmaker Nelson George about the album’s legacy.
