Rapsody opened up a three-week run of singles on Fridays, released in conjunction with TiDAL, with “The Pain” — a straightforward look at the relationships between black men and women, and how it’s often him versus her when it should be them versus the rest.

“It’s always a men vs. women thing,” the Jamla Records rapper told Genius about the song. “Nah, like everybody has a view and story, and at the end of the day, we need to respect each other. We all in the same fight.”

Watch Rapsody go through each verse of the song and explain her thought process and influence below.

“The Pain” is also also currently nominated for Verse of the Month — taking on Lloyd Banks, Skyzoo, Bun B, Joyner Lucas and Vic Mensa. Get your vote in now!
