When he’s not being a man of the people, J. Cole is bringing a higher level of consciousness to the television screens.

Cole is serving as an executive producer for Raising Bertie, a forthcoming POV (point-of-view) documentary by filmmaker Margaret Byrne. The film will follow three Black youths — Reginald “Junior” Askew, David “Bud” Perry, and Davonte “Dada” Harrell — growing up in Bertie County, a small North Carolina town with a population of just over 20,000 people. Filmed over the course of six years, Raising Bertie follows the lives of Askew, Perry and Harrell and their families.

“I didn’t want to focus on stories of the exceptional,” Byrne said in a statement. “The truth is, I made a film about three kids I met and I cared about. The individuals in this story are representative of their community and they matter.”

Set to debut on PBS on August 28th, a trailer for Raising Bertie can be seen below.
