It’s been three years since Jhené Aiko‘s debut solo effort, Souled Out. Since, she’s gone on to raise her profile through an endless number of feature roles, eventually teaming with Big Sean on the sleek and bougie TWENTY 88 EP.
Every couple months or so since that project, she’s popped up with a song (“Maniac,” “While We’re Young“), but they’re all one-offs, springboards to the next single. It seems that trend will come to a close soon, though, as she’s announced her next album: TRIP 17.
Her label – Def Jam Recordings — posted a page from Playboy’s upcoming issue, which will feature a profile on Jhené.
She said the album is “inspired by every type of trip you could imagine: mental, physical, even psychedelic. … I’m at a point where I put it all in the music. It’s a puzzle I want people to put together.” The writer of the profile (Rebecca Haithcoat) says Aiko turned her upcoming album “into a map.”
“I’m a bit of an escape artist. I like to take myself out of my element and create. I went to Hawaii by myself and hiked. When you connect with nature, you connect with yourself,” Aiko said, which inspires the idea of TRIP 17 taking you on a journey — presumably a journey of her own self-exploration.
While there’s no set release date for TRIP 17 just yet, the upcoming profile is an indication Aiko is ready to ramp up promotion. Let’s see where this goes.
