Stefan Ponce – “Super Star” f. KYLE, theMIND, Julian Bell & Micah Freeman

blame it on Patrick Glynn August 30, 2017

Stefan Ponce is the producer behind songs like Childish Gambino’s “3005” and Vic Mensa’s “Down On My Luck,” so you’ve most likely heard his work before. (He also provided one of the best remixes of Kanye’s acapella “I Love Kanye.”)

The Chicago-based producer has branched into developing a solo career, releasing one of his first singles, “Drive-In,” with two up-and-comers from the city: theMIND and Julian Bell. They join Ponce again on his latest song, “Super Star,” which also has features from rapper/singer Micah Freeman and KYLE.

Already having established relationships with theMIND and Bell, the producer talked discussed working with Freeman and KYLE on the song:

“Micah came to Chicago to work with me on his project, and in the midst of him being here I’d drive him to his AirBnB. While doing so, I started playing him my album and he said he really liked the rough version of ‘Super Star,’ so I sent it to him and within a couple days he sent me his verse and it was perfect.” And as for the “iSpy” rapper, who handles the outro: “I’m grateful to have someone as talented as KYLE, who’s such a good person, to hop on the song. He added such a different perspective from what we had originally.”

This is a helluva bunch of voices and personalities to bring together on one song, and Ponce handles it well with the retro, energetic, soulful “Super Star.”
