SonReal Tributes Late Father In “My Friend” Video

While enduring a rigorous touring schedule, Vancouver’s SonReal lost his father to a fatal heart attack in February 2016. During the recording process of One Long Dream, SonReal was able to cope with the loss throughout its completion. “My Friend” became the artist’s bittersweet ode to him.

“The years leading up to his death he became less of a father figure to me and more of a very dear friend,” SonReal says. “When he passed I was in the beginning of a tour and never really had the opportunity to cope. I was terrified to write a song about this. I was terrified it wouldn’t be enough to justify my father. Despite that feeling, I sat down in my home studio one night and wrote something special for My Friend.”

Produced by R&B legend Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, the track will be a bonus track on a deluxe edition of One Long Dream. A visual has now been released, directed by Dane Collison (who also helmed SonReal’s “Repo Man” video), and can be seen below.
