Although the DJ Scratch-laced “Echo” with Swizz Beatz may be better than anything heard on Nas‘ joint effort with Kanye West, the legendary emcee breathes new life into NASIR with an accompanying short film.

Written and directed by Rohan Blair-Mangat, the 16-minute film touches on racism, police brutality and black excellence with clips of the legendary emcee reciting the songs on rooftops, empty beaches and NYC parking lots in front of a white Mercedes Benz with Illmatic on the license plate. Slick Rick also makes a cameo while “Cop Shot the Kid” rings off during one of the more tragic scenes.
