Today (December 4th) is the 50th birthday of one Shawn Corey Carter, better known as Jay-Z. To celebrate, he’s done something that he hasn’t done in over two years.
He put his entire discography back on his Tidal rival, Spotify.
Back in 2017, Jay pulled his entire solo catalog — from Reasonable Doubt to Magna Carta Holy Grail (his thirteenth album, 4:44, never even landed on the platform) — off the DSP’s e-shelves (they were, however, all on Apple Music). So, unless you had Apple Music, Tidal, or — if you were like me — just snatched a copy off of the Internets (hey, I deejay on the side, plus you can’t really listen to streaming music that well when you’re underground on a train. Also, I’m frugal ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ), Spotify was off the table until the clock struck 12 on Jay’s born date.
Naturally, Spotify was excited to once again be making money off of him once again bring back his catalog:
