Is Compton in the house?
After redefining what Normal is on his latest EP, Compton’s Garren is back in action with the release of his new album, The New (Normal).
“It’s more focused on how it is growing up in South Central and Compton and the mindset you have to have to get out of these environments,” the singer says. “Making decisions for the future and not getting caught in the temporary satisfaction… that is what I call being ‘normal.'”
Locked in at 11 tracks, including the previously-released “It’s Complicated,” The New (Normal) can be heard below and added wherever you get music.
In 2019, while working on the album, Garren also put his focus into film and teamed up with director Tari Wariebi on Normal: The Documentary.
The 19-minute film offered an honest look into the singer’s personal experience growing up in Compton and forms a collective point of view on how young black men can transform their life by following what they deem to be true to themselves, despite negative societal stigmas. On top of winning “Best Documentary Short” at the Los Angeles Movie Awards, it was also an official selection of the St. Louis International Film Festival.
